TREE & HEDGEROW PLANTING SCHEME
Helping raise the profile of
GTfL to the benefit of the
whole local community.
Guernsey Trees for Life and Channel Islands Fuels
Guernsey Trees for Life (GTFL) is a local charity that with support from business and the wider Guernsey community aims to plant over 1000 tree and hedge plants every year in Guernsey. Their policy is to plant native and naturalised species of trees on marginal land (i.e. land which is not already being used for other purposes such as gardens or prime agriculture). Although they generally focus on larger plantings (above 30-40 trees/site) they are more concerned with finding the best sites to plant rather than planting as many trees as possible so they will consider all sites, however small, if their planting makes a significant contribution to the public amenity of an area. For more information on all their activities go to www.gtfl.earth
After considering a number of local, charitable initiatives that Channel Islands Fuels could support in the long-term. The work undertaken by Guernsey Trees for Life struck a particular chord as it was a genuinely local initiative with very measurable, visible results that with the efforts of its highly committed group of volunteers looks to involve and educate the community wherever possible. So, it was a very simple decision to partner with GTfL and their important work.
Ian English, Channel Islands Fuels Limited
“With the support of Channel Islands Fuels we have been able to accelerate our program of tree and hedgerow planting across the island with around a threefold increase in the numbers of sites and the amount of trees & hedgerow planted. This increase has undoubtedly raised the profile of the charity to the benefit of the whole local community’’
Andy McCutcheon, Guernsey Trees for Life
Colin Dodd, GTFL Committee says: “The Charity’s good work and importance to the community and the island environment was really highlighted in 2023 with Storm Ciaran on 1st November 2023. We were lucky compared to our sister island Jersey, but still we suffered significant tree damage. Our continuous tree planting work each season, year in year out to replenish stocks on island, means that storm damage can quickly be restored within a few years.
Our tree planting schemes focus on planting a minimum of 500 native tree & hedge plants annually and thanks to funding from our principal benefactor, Channel Island Fuels Limited, we’ve been able to increase this rate of planting to over 3,000 tree & hedge plants this season. Considering our size, this is a really positive contribution, adding significantly to the repopulation of native species and enhancement of the biodiversity of selected areas in Guernsey.
GTFL benefits greatly from the support of regular volunteers who come out in force to help with the heavy work of tree planting and we would like to thank those individuals for their continued support, some of whom come from corporates as part of their corporate and social responsibility contribution.
